Hangouts
Hangouts is a Google App for group chatting, video chatting, and more. It primarily uses your Google contacts in GMail and it has been very popular among teens and tweens. It's very difficult to know what your child is sharing through a video chat app. All messaging apps have risks for bullying and sexting. When group chatting, your child could be added to a chat with people they don't know. Therefore, there is also a risk for meeting strangers when using Google Hangouts. Parents should always know what messaging/communications apps their children have and who they are talking to. No minor should have this app without parent permission.
Before letting your child use Google Hangouts it is important to discuss the risks involved such as bullying, sexting and meeting strangers. Please refer to our Parent's Guides for tips on how to approach talking to your child about these risks.
