Mimic - make funny lip sync music videos

This is a karaoke app where children create videos of themselves lip-syncing which are then posted to a public news feed where anyone can view, like, comment, or follow your child to be notified when they post a new video. Apps like this have become widely popular in the past few years (see Musical.ly) and can have a range of dangerous features which can put your child at risk of bullying, adult content, sexting and meeting strangers. This app does not allow users to search by username or content but it puts your child's video on a public feed where any user can see it. While reviewing this app, we found a number of children intensely bullying other children, calling them "ugly", "fat", "loser", and worse. We also found adults following the activity of several minors at a time and commenting on their videos in a sexually suggestive way. No child should use this app.
This type of karaoke app is very popular and may seem harmless at first glance but it can be very dangerous for children to use. Through this app, your child is exposed to intense bullying and connected with strangers who can easily start a conversation with them through the comments section of their videos and form an inappropriate relationship. Ask your child why they want to use this app. If they enjoy making music videos of themselves singing, you can help them do this in a much safer way, without sharing the videos with strangers. If your child enjoys communicating with strangers online, you should explain to them why this is too dangerous. Please refer to our Parent's Guides section for more information on how to talk to your child about the risks associated with this app.
